In the kingdom of Aolai, located within the Dongsheng Shenzhou, lies the Flower and Fruit Mountain. On this mountain, an immortal stone gave birth to a stone monkey. At the source of the stream where the stone monkey resided, it discovered a stone cave known as the "Water Curtain Cave" and was acclaimed as its king by the other monkeys. After another three to five hundred years, the stone monkey was moved by the realization of life's impermanence and its inability to enjoy a long life, and it wept bitterly. Following the guidance of an elderly monkey, the stone monkey journeyed from the Southern Shangbu Continent to the Western Niuhe Continent, ascended to the Fangcun Mountain on the Spirit Terrace, entered the Xiyue Sanxing Cave, and paid homage to Patriarch Bodhi; there, he was accepted as a disciple and given the name Sun Wukong.
● The second session: comprehending the profound truth of Bodhi, overcoming demonic influences, returning to one's original nature, and uniting the primordial spirit.
Wukong learned the art of eternal life, the seventy-two forms of transformation, and the "Clouduggle" technique from the Patriarch. One day, provoked by others, he transformed into a pine tree, which displeased the Patriarch and led to his expulsion from the cave. Upon returning to Flower-Fruit Mountain, he fought and defeated the local demons and monsters, thereby rescuing the captured monkeys and recovering their belongings.
● Chapter III: All lands and mountains bow in submission; all nine realms and ten categories are finally eradicated.
Wukong employed the Seizing Technique to transport the weapons stored in the Aolai Kingdom's Treasury Hall into the mountains, where he then led a troop of monkeys in training. The demons and beasts inhabiting the mountains all revered Wukong as their supreme leader. Wukong requested from the Dragon King a Ruyi Golden Staff weighing 13,500 jin and then removed the name of the monkey clan from the Book of Life and Death in the Underworld. The Dragon King and the King of Hell then petitioned the Jade Emperor to subdue the rebellious monkeys. The Jade Emperor dispatched Taibai Jinxing to Mount Huaguoshan to persuade Wukong to submit to imperial authority.
● Chapter 4: The official appointment of the horsekeeper—what significance does it hold? Yet the heart remains unsettled, and the will to reach the heavens remains unquiet.
Wukong was appointed as the "Horse Caretaker"; upon learning that this was a low-ranking position, he returned to Flower-Fruit Mountain. The Jade Emperor then ordered the Heavenly King Li Tianwang and his son, Crown Prince Nezha, to capture Wukong, but Wukong defeated them. Subsequently, the Golden Star once again summoned Wukong. The Jade Emperor ordered the construction of the Great Sage's Palace, where Wukong was to reside.
● Chapter 5: The Great Sage Steals a Pill and Defies the Heavenly Palace; The Gods Catch the Monster
Wukong manages the peach garden and eats all the big peaches in the garden. Then he went to Yaochi, drank all the immortal wine, and ate all the golden elixirs in Taishang Laojun's gourd. Escape back to Huaguo Mountain. The Jade Emperor ordered King Tota to lead his heavenly soldiers to capture Wukong. Wukong fought off the gods.
●Chapter 6 Guanyin went to the meeting and asked why the little sage used his power to surrender to the great sage.
Mu Cha, a disciple of Guanyin in the South China Sea, helped the King of Heaven but was defeated. Guanyin also recommended Erlang Shen. Erlangshen fought with Wukong. Taishang Laojun was watching the battle in the sky, dropped the diamond sleeve and hit Wukong. The gods escorted him back to the upper world. The Jade Emperor issued a decree to execute him.
●Chapter 7 Escape from the Bagua Furnace and the Calming Monkey at the foot of the Five Elements Mountain of the Great Sage
Taishang Laojun put Wukong into the alchemy furnace to refine it. Forty-nine days later, Wukong came out and made a big fuss in the heavenly palace. The Jade Emperor invited Tathagata Buddha. Sun Wukong somersaulted all the way and couldn't jump out of the Buddha's palm. Tathagata turned his five fingers into mountains to suppress Wukong. He ordered the Earth God to feed Wukong with iron pills and copper juice.
●Eighth Chapter: My Buddha created a sutra and preached extremely optimistic news, and went to Chang'an on an edict
Five hundred years later, Tathagata Buddha wanted to find a follower to learn the scriptures so that the Buddha's teachings could be spread to the east forever. Avalokitesvara led the wooden chak to ride on the clouds, carrying a cassock, a tin staff and three hoops of gold, tight and forbidden. Along the way, they subdue Sha Wujing, Zhu Wuneng and Xiao Bailong; persuade Sun Wukong and let them protect the Buddhist scriptures together.

Chen Guangrui was delighted to win the first prize, was recruited as the prime minister's son-in-law, and was appointed as the head of Jiangzhou. On the way to take office, he was killed by boatman Liu Hong and his wife was robbed. Liu Hong assumed the post as a bailiff. Chen was rescued by the Dragon King and taken into the Dragon Palace. His wife gave birth to a son and threw him into the river. He was rescued by the elders of Jinshan Temple; he was named Jiangliu and later Xuanzang. The elders told him about his life experience. Xuanzang found his mother. Then he went straight to the capital to complain to his grandfather. Liu Hong was sentenced to death. Chen Guangrui returned to Yang. Xuanzang entered Hongfu Temple to continue his spiritual practice.
●Chapter 9 Yuan Shoucheng's clever plan for selfless Qu Laolongwang's clumsy plan to violate Tian Tiao
In order to make Yuan Shoucheng's prediction fail, the Dragon King of Jinghe secretly changed the rainfall into Chenchen and the amount of rainfall. He also destroyed Yuan Shoucheng's Gua Shop based on his inaccurate possession. Yuan Shoucheng asserted that the Dragon King would be executed by Wei Zheng, the Prime Minister of the Tang Dynasty, for violating the decree. And asked the Dragon King to ask Tang Taizong for a way out. Taizong Meng Longwang begged for mercy and agreed to it, and ordered Wei Zheng to serve in the court so that he could not kill the dragon.
●Chapter 10 The second general’s palace gate suppresses ghosts and the ghost of Tang Taizong returns to the underworld
When Wei Zheng and Taizong were fighting against Yi, he dreamed of killing the old dragon. That night, Emperor Taizong dreamed of the Dragon King demanding his life. From then on, he became uneasy physically and mentally and fell ill. In order to prevent sneaking, he ordered Wei Chigong and Qin Shubao to guard the palace gate at night. Taizong died soon after, and in the underworld he met Cui Jue, an old friend of Wei Zheng who was now the judge of the underworld. Cui Jue extended Taizong's life by twenty years. On the way back to Yang, Taizong was entangled by evil ghosts and escaped by scattering gold and silver to the ghosts.

Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty came back to life and came to the court to declare a general amnesty for the whole world. It was strictly forbidden to slander monks and slander Buddha. Everyone recommended Chen Xuanzang to preside over the land and water conference, and Taizong agreed.

Ascending the stage, Guanyin expounded upon the profound wisdom of the Mahayana Buddhist teachings to Xuanzang; moved by this, Xuanzang resolved to journey to the Western Heaven. In recognition of his dedication, Emperor Taizong honored him as the "Imperial Brother, the Holy Monk" and conferred upon him the title "Sanzang." Thus, the Tang monk Sanzang departed for the Western Heaven.
●Chapter 13: Entering the Tiger's Den; Jin Xing Overcomes Misfortune; Boqin留住 the Monk at Shuangcha Ridge
Tang Sanzang rode his horse westward. At the mountain-side town, he climbed Shuangcha Ridge at night and was captured by soldiers under the Tiger King. Taibai Jinxing rescued Tang Sanzang. As Tang Sanzang was traveling toward Liangjie Mountain, he suddenly heard a thunderous shout: "My master is coming!"
●Chapter 14: The Mindful Monkey Returns to Righteousness – The Six Thieves Vanish Without Trace
The speaker is Sun Wukong. Tang Sanzang takes Wukong as his disciple. During their journey westward, Wukong slays six bandits who had disrupted their path; Tang Sanzang expresses deep regret over this. Wukong then departs from Tang Sanzang on a cloud. Guanyin imparts the Tightening Ring Spell to Tang Sanzang; upon receiving the Dragon King's counsel, Wukong reaffirms his commitment to protecting Tang Sanzang and dons the Tightening Ring Spell, declaring that he will not defy his master's teachings by revealing his true identity.
● Chapter 15: The gods of Snake-Circling Mountain secretly protect Yingchou Gorge as the spirited horse retracts its reins.
While traveling along the Snake-Circling Mountain, the horse was swallowed by a dragon in the Eagle-Sorrow Stream. Guanyin summoned the evil dragon and transformed it into a white horse, which she bestowed upon Tang Sanzang as his mount.
●Chapter 16: The monks of Guanyin Temple plot to steal the monastic robe from the mysterious creature of Black Wind Mountain
Upon arriving at the Guanyin Zen Temple, the elderly abbot, seeking to seize the monastic robe, intended to set fire to Tang Sanzang and his disciples to kill them. However, Wukong borrowed a fire-shielding garment from the celestial realm to protect Tang Sanzang, while he himself blew wind from the side to extinguish the flames that had engulfed the Zen Temple. The bear monster from Black Wind Mountain took advantage of the fire to steal the monastic robe. Wukong then ascended the mountain to confront the monster and demand the robe back.
●Chapter 17: Sun Wukong Causes Havoc at Black Wind Mountain; Guanyin Subdues the Bear and Wild Beast Monster
Wukong saw a dark-skinned man discussing the organization of a Buddhist robe-wearing ceremony with a Taoist priest and a scholar dressed in white; he then slew the scholar and battled the snake monster. Outside the cave, Wukong defeated a small demon and received an invitation, so he transformed into the elderly abbot to attend the gathering. When his true identity was exposed, he had no choice but to summon Guanyin. Guanyin assumed the form of a Taoist priest and persuaded the bear monster to swallow the elixir that Wukong had transformed into. Within his own body, Wukong caused the bear monster unbearable pain; ultimately, the bear monster had no choice but to return its robe and rejoin the Buddhist community.
●Chapter 18: Tang Sanzang Escapes from Peril at Guanyin Temple; The Great Sage Eradicates Demons at Gaolaozhuang
Gao Taigong of Gaolaozhuang, having been married into the family by a monster, requested that he be sent to subdue the creature. Sun Wukong then assumed the form of Gao Taigong's daughter to deceive the monster; afterward, he revealed his true self. The monster transformed into a fierce storm and fled, while Sun Wukong pursued it relentlessly.
● Chapter 19: Wukong Recruits Bajie at Yunzhan Cave; Xuanzang Receives the Heart Sutra at Futushan
The strange creature entered the cave and retrieved a nine-toothed rake; then it confronted Wukong. Upon hearing Wukong's words—that he had come to protect Tang Sanzang—the creature dropped the rake and followed Wukong to pay homage to Tang Sanzang; Wukong later identified this creature as Zhu Bajie. The three then journeyed to Futu Mountain, where they met Zen Master Wuchao and obtained a copy of the *Heart Sutra* from him.
●Chapter 20: Tang Sanzang Faced with Peril at Huangfeng Ridge – Bajie Rushes Forward Halfway Up the Mountain
The Yellow Wind Monster, the Vanguard Tiger Spirit of Huangfeng Ridge, captured Tang Sanzang and led him into the cave. Wukong and Bajie rushed to the cave entrance to engage the monster in battle. Unable to withstand the attack, the Tiger Vanguard retreated and was slain by Bajie's mighty whip strike.
●Chapter 21: The Dharma Protector establishes a monastery to detain the Great Sage; Lingji subdues the Wind Demon on Mount Sumeru
Wukong could not defeat Huangfeng Sheng and was ultimately defeated. He then summoned Lingji, who captured the demon transformed from a yellow-furred mink and rescued Tang Sanzang.
●Chapter 22: Bajie Engages in a Great Battle at the Flowing Sand River; Muka Accompanies Fengfa to Reunite with Wujing
In the story, a monster attempted to snatch the Tang Sanzang away; thus, Bajie and Wukong set out to confront it. The monster hid in the water and refused to come ashore. Wukong then sought out Guanyin, who instructed him to accompany him with his wooden halberd. With this, Wukong called out the name of the monster, Wujing. Wujing then fashioned a magical boat from the skull beneath his neck and used it to ferry the Tang Sanzang across the river.
●Chapter 23: The Tripitaka Remains True to Its Roots; The Four Sages Test the Zen Mind
Lishan Old Mother, Guanyin, Samantabhadra, and Manjusri Bodhisattva became mother and daughter, intending to test whether the four people's Zen hearts were strong, but the Eight Precepts' Zen hearts were not strong and were tied up.
●Chapter 24: The Great Immortal of Wanshou Village stays with his old friend Wuzhuang Guanxing and steals ginseng
There is a tree in the Longevity Villa that bears ginseng fruit, which makes you immortal after eating it. The second boy of Yuanzidu in Guanzhu Town treated Tang Monk with ginseng fruit. He mistakenly thought that the ginseng fruit was a baby and did not dare to eat it. Wukong stole three fruits and shared them with Bajie and Sha Seng. Bajie thought it was too little and kept talking. The second boy cursed Tang Seng.
●Chapter 25 Zhen Yuanxian rushes to capture the Buddhist monk Sun Xingzhe and causes a disturbance in Wuzhuang Temple
Wukong couldn't bear the curse and knocked down the tree. Ertong designed to lock Tang Monk and his disciples into the main hall. The master and apprentice escaped at night. Zhen Yuanzi caught up with Zong Yun and used his robe sleeves to cage Tang Monk and his entourage back. The master and apprentice escaped again at night. Zhen Yuanzi ordered Wukong to be fried in a pot, but Wukong turned into a stone lion and smashed the pot through.

Wukong visited Guanyin to heal the fruit tree, and Guanyin came with Wukong to revive the fruit tree. Zhen Yuanzi held a ginseng fruit party, entertained Guanyin, the immortals and Tang Monk masters and apprentices, and became brothers with Wukong.

Monk Tang sent Wukong to prepare a vegetarian meal. The goblin in the mountain transformed into a beauty, an old woman, and an old man to confuse Monk Tang. Wukong killed the goblin. Tang Monk was furious and drove Wukong away.
●Chapter 28: Demons gather in Huaguo Mountain and Sanzang encounters demons in Black Pine Forest
Wukong returned to Huaguo Mountain and spread wind and rocks to kill all the hunters who went up the mountain to catch monkeys.
Tang Monk mistakenly entered the demon cave and was captured. Bajie, Sha Seng and the old yellow-robed monster were killing each other in mid-air.
●Chapter 29: The Tuojin River flows to the land to express its gratitude and Bajie turns to the mountains and forests
Tang Monk saw a woman in the cave, claiming to be the princess of Baoxiang Kingdom, who was photographed by a yellow-robed monster thirteen years ago. The princess persuaded the old demon to be released into the Tang Dynasty. When they arrived at Baoxiang, Monk Tang handed the king the letter entrusted by the woman. The king begged Bajie and Sha Seng to subdue the monster and save the daughter. The two agreed and went to fight the yellow-robed monster. Bajie was unable to defeat him and hid in the bushes. Sha Monk was captured by the yellow-robed monster and thrown into the cave.
●Chapter 30: Evil Demons Invade Zhengfa Yima Yixinyuan
The yellow-robed monster turned into a beautiful man and went to Baoxiang Kingdom to visit his father-in-law, transforming Tang Bei into a tiger. The white dragon horse turned into a palace maid, raised a knife to attack the yellow-robed monster, and was hit in the hind leg. Bajie wants to return to Gao Laozhuang, and Bai Longma persuades him to go find Wukong. Wu refused, and Bajie went down the mountain and cursed, but was caught by the monkeys.
●Chapter 31: Zhu Bajie’s righteousness inspires Monkey King Sun Xingzhe to defeat the nine monsters with wisdom
Bajie used the provoking method to make Wukong follow him immediately. Wukong turned into a princess and cried bitterly. He swallowed the inner alchemy relics of the nine monsters and showed his true appearance. He beat the monsters with sticks and disappeared without a trace. Wukong went to the heaven to investigate, and the Star God chanted a spell to take back the Kuimulang who secretly came down to earth to cause trouble. Wukong brought the princess back to his country and restored Tang Monk to his original body.

Traveling to a mountain, Wukong heard that there was a demon and asked his master to let Bajie go patrol the mountain. Bajie wants to lie around and sleep, making up lies to deceive others, but Wukong, who has been transformed into a bug, hears everything and exposes his lies face to face. Bajie had no choice but to explore the road again. King Yinjiao, one of the two demons, led a group of demons to patrol the cave and captured Bajie.

King Silver Horn turned into a Taoist priest who had fallen and broke his leg, lying on the road. Tang Monk asked Wukong to pick him up. Wukong transformed into a steel file and cut the rope to escape. He turned into a little demon and stole the gold rope. King Silver Horn used a gourd to contain Wukong. Wukong tricked the demon into opening the gourd, took the opportunity to escape, then sneaked into the hole and stole the gourd.

Tang Monk understood this and was filled with joy. Bajie and Sha Seng observed the moon and each gained something from Buddhism.

Red Boy used the wind to scare away Tang Sanzang. Upon learning that Red Boy was the son of the Bull Demon King—his sworn brother from five hundred years earlier—Wukong sought to leverage this relationship to reclaim his master from him.

The monster from the Heishui River transformed into a boatman and lured Tang Sanzang and Zhu Bajie beneath the water with their boat. Sha Wujing dove down into the depths and fought the monster fiercely, but was unable to defeat it. Sun Wukong then confronted the Dragon King for this trespass, and the Dragon King ordered his prince, Mo Ang, to be sent out to subdue the monster.

They arrived at the Kingdom of Chechi. There, the king had promoted Confucianism and suppressed Buddhism; as a result, all the monks were sentenced to perform hard labor. Wukong supervised the laborers, freed the monks, woke up Bajie and Sha Wujing, blew the wind to disperse the assembly of Taoist priests, toppled the statues within the temple, and transformed them into offerings for the Three Pure Ones.
●Chapter 45: The Great Sage Leaves His Name at the Sanqing Temple; the Monkey King of the Qechi Kingdom Reveals His Divine Power
The Taoist priests regarded the three men as the Three Pure Ones descending to pray for rain; they offered their urine and then soared back into the sky. The Three Great Immortals then reported to the king that Wukong and his companions had slain the Taoist priests and were pretending to be the Three Pure Ones. The king ordered Tang Sanzang and his companions to compete against the Three Great Immortals in a wager to secure rain. The Great Immortal Tiger Power first ascended the altar and performed a magical ritual, summoning the gods of wind, cloud, and mist, as well as the Dragon Kings of the four seas; however, Wukong used his magical powers to thwart this spell, and no rain fell. Then Wukong himself ascended the altar, where thunder and lightning erupted, and a torrential downpour began to fall.
●Chapter 46: The heterodox sects employ forceful tactics to oppress the orthodox practitioners; the Mind Monkey reveals his divine power to eradicate all heretical forces.
Hulì and Tang Sanzang each sat on separate high platforms meditating. Hulì transformed into a cockroach and bit Tang Sanzang; Wukong then turned into a centipede and stung the Great Immortal Hulì, causing him to fall off. They also engaged in various gambling games—such as guessing what was inside a cabinet, betting on having their heads cut off or abdomens剖开, or bathing in an oil pot—among other challenges. Thanks to Wukong's clever tricks, all three great immortals lost their bets.
●Chapter 47: The Holy Monk Prevents the Flow of Heavenly Water; Jinmu's Compassionate Intervention Saves a Young Boy

The master and apprentice entered another city and went to the home of the bandit's wife, the monk Xingxi Zhai. Tang Seng Wei Yuan Wai stopped serving as a fasting monk and had achieved a perfect Taoist temple of ten thousand yuan. Kou Yuan Wai saw off Tang Seng Master and his disciples and returned in tears.
●Chapter 97: The paid guard is stung by demons; the ghost appears to save Yuan Yuan
The robbers entered the Kou's house at night and kicked the soldiers to death. His wife Tunzi went to the government to falsely accuse Tang Monk and his party. Wukong bound the bandits. The master and apprentice wanted to return the property to the Kou family, but were taken into the city by the soldiers. At the fifth watch, Wukong transformed into a grasshopper and flew into Kou's house. He bit the coffin and pretended to be a member of the army to speak, so that his wife could withdraw the complaint. He also flew into the governor's house, pretended to be the soul of his uncle, and ordered the release of Tang Monk and his party. At dawn, he stretched out a foot from mid-air, filled the county hall with beauty, and ordered the officials to release Tang Monk immediately. After the master and apprentice were released, Wukong went straight to Senluo Palace to retrieve the soul of the bandit and bring him back to life.
●Chapter 98: The ape is cooked and the horse is tamed and then sheds its shell. Successful actions are full of true knowledge.
When I arrived at Yuzhen Temple, I was greeted by the Golden Summit Immortal. The next morning, four people climbed Lingshan Mountain. Meet the big river. Tang Monk lost his footing and fell into the water. His mortal body was taken off and turned into a corpse in the water. The group went up the mountain to the Leiyin Temple where the Tathagata Buddha is located, and paid homage to the Tathagata. Anuo and Kassapa were ordered by Tathagata to retrieve Buddhist scriptures, but they took the opportunity to ask for gifts, but Tang Monk did not prepare them and got the wordless scriptures. Tang Monk came to pray to the Buddha again. After Anuo and Kasyapa got Tang Monk's purple gold bowl, they recited the sutras.
●Chapter Ninety-Nine: The demons are exterminated after ninety-nine counts, and the three or three lines complete the path and return to the root.
Guanyin Bodhisattva observed the calamities befalling the monk and noticed that one of the eighty-one requisite conditions was still missing; thus, she commanded Jieti to inflict another tribulation upon him. The various yin demons attempted to conjure wind and rain in an attempt to seize the sutras, yet they failed. At dawn, the villagers welcomed Tang Sanzang and his disciples warmly upon their return. At the third watch of the night, the disciples departed.
●Chapter 100: Return to the Eastern Land; The Five Saints Become Real
The four disciples returned to Chang 'an and were warmly welcomed by Emperor Taizong of Tang and his court officials. The following day, Emperor Taizong convened the imperial court and composed the "Preface to the Sacred Teaching" to acknowledge the Tang monk's remarkable contribution to the quest for Buddhist scriptures; he also adopted the suggestion made by Xiao Yu, inviting the Tang monk to deliver the sutra-recitation ceremony at the Wild Goose Pagoda Temple. As the Tang monk carried the scriptures up the platform, he suddenly heard the call of the Eight Great Vajra Guardians and thus ascended into the Western Heavens. There, the Tathagata conferred the following titles upon the monks: the Tang monk as the "Buddha of Sandalwood Merit"; Sun Wukong as the "Victorious Buddha of Battle"; Zhu Bajie as the "Temple-Purifying Envoy"; Sha Wujing as the "Golden-Body Arhat"; and the White Dragon Horse as one of the Eight Heavenly Dragon Horses.
