What does loose or watery stool mean in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

What does loose or watery stool mean in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice, loose stools typically refer to stools that are more watery than usual or even ooze out; this condition is also known as diarrhea. It often occurs in cases associated with TCM pathological mechanisms such as spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, indigestion, or excessive dampness.

Spleen and stomach deficiency-cold refers to a lack of yang qi in the body, which leads to impaired function of the digestive system and consequently affects stool formation. Dyspepsia refers to weakened digestive and absorptive functions in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in incomplete digestion and absorption of food, which in turn causes loose or watery stools. Excessive dampness refers to an elevated environmental humidity level that exacerbates internal dampness in the body, also affecting stool formation.

In the treatment of loose stools, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) employs various therapeutic approaches tailored to the specific clinical presentation. For instance, in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency-cold syndrome, methods such as moxibustion, hot compresses, or cooking soups can be used to warm the spleen and stomach and enhance digestive and absorptive functions. For indigestion, techniques aimed at promoting digestion and relieving stagnation, as well as strengthening the spleen and replenishing qi, may be applied to facilitate gastrointestinal digestion and absorption. In cases of excessive dampness, methods such as clearing heat and eliminating dampness, or using aromatic herbs to resolve dampness, can be employed to remove dampness and alleviate the symptoms of loose stools.

"Pediatric chickenpox with Yang deficiency-induced diarrhea" is a term used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this context, "Yang deficiency" refers to an insufficient amount of Yang energy in the body, while "induced diarrhea" indicates the occurrence of diarrhea. According to TCM theory, when a child develops chickenpox, the internal accumulation of toxic substances can easily impair the spleen and stomach, leading to dysfunction of these organs, decreased appetite, indigestion, and ultimately resulting in Yang energy deficiency. At this stage, intestinal function weakens, and water cannot be absorbed adequately, which causes diarrhea. Additionally, during a child's chickenpox illness, parents may administer certain heat-clearing or detoxifying medications to the child...

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, what is "kèjǐ"? Hobbies Traditional Chinese Medicine Terminology

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, cough with palpitations is generally regarded as a comprehensive manifestation of symptoms such as "cough with dyspnea," "palpitations," or "chest pain." TCM posits that this condition arises when internal pathogenic factors—such as phlegm retention, blood stasis, or heat accumulation—congregate in the lungs or heart, leading to obstruction of the qi flow in these organs. The key to treating cough with palpitations lies in eliminating these internal pathogenic factors, unblocking the qi mechanism, and promoting blood circulation to resolve stasis, thereby alleviating symptoms including coughing, dyspnea, palpitations, or chest pain. TCM approaches for managing cough with palpitations include acupuncture, herbal medicine, tuina massage, and other therapeutic techniques.
